Is Synthetic Motor Oil Better Than Conventional Oil?

Conventional motor oil is a byproduct of crude oil, and takes very little processing for it to be ready to use. It is used in vehicle engines because it provides lubrication when the engine gets hot, and it is stable for long periods of time.

The Basics of Synthetic Motor Oil
Synthetic oil is, like conventional motor oil, distilled. But that’s where the similarities end. Synthetic motor oil, after distillation, is then sent through purification processes to remove impurities from the crude oil.
Then, depending on the brand, individual molecules that affect the performance of an engine are added. This is why synthetic oil often has “with ____ additives” on the label. These additives can benefit an engine in a variety of ways, which is why it is more useful in modern engines.
The Verdict Is In: Synthetic Is the Way to Go
Because of the additives and extra processing we find in synthetic motor oil, most modern engines work better when it is used. This is especially true if a vehicle bears a lot of weight, is used in extreme weather conditions, or is “older” with more miles.
There are a few reasons synthetic is now preferred over conventional:
- Less engine build-up. Conventional motor oil is less refined, and therefore still has some “sludge” in it that can build up on a motor. This sludge, if not properly taken care of, can restrict function.
- Cold and hot weather tolerance. In below-zero temperatures, conventional motor oil starts to thicken and slow. With synthetic motor oil, its additives help it flow better (and prevent freezing). In desert-level heat, conventional oil can evaporate, leaving a vehicle overheated and useless. The additives in synthetic oil help to prevent such incidents.
- Improved protection. The main function of motor oil is to protect all of the components of your engine by lubricating them. Conventional motor oil does this, but it has less versatility and a shorter lifespan than synthetic. The additives can also protect certain areas of the engine that are prone to wear and tear.
Modern Vehicles Need Synthetic Motor Oil
While conventional oil still has its place in maintaining vehicle engines, modern motors are more complex and need as much support as possible. Thanks to the refining and additive process in synthetic motor oil creation, vehicle owners can prevent trouble before it arises and extend the life of their vehicle.
